Summer School

Cow Hollow School Summer Program 2015:

Summer Program at CHS:

Program Hours: 9:00 to 2:00 pm, Monday – Friday

Age Cut-off: Available to children 3 by July 1- 5.9 years of age. Due to our license regulations we cannot have children over 5.9 years of age by the first day of each session.

Groupings: Age grouping will be determined after enrollment. CHS prides itself on low teacher to child ratios. This will continue throughout the summer program. It is our goal, when possible, to have to have your child experience learning and playing with at least one of his/her fall teachers and some of his/her class members. Non-school year families attending the CHS summer program will be kept with children in their initial grouping.

  • Hummingbirds: 3 years old
  • Robins: 4-5 years old
  • Red Tail Hawks: 4-5.9 years old

Program Sessions: To encourage the same rich relationships based learning we will have two 2-week sessions and one 3-week session (dates below).

Relationships: It is our goal, when possible, to have your child experience learning and playing with at least one of his/her fall teachers and some of his/her class members. Non-school year families attending in summer will be kept with children in their initial grouping.

Parent Participation: Although part of our school year program, parent participation is not required for our Summer Program…but is always welcome!

Snacks and Meals: Program tuition will include lunch and snack. Snack will be provided by Cow Hollow School. The Lunch Program will once again be offered through SchoolFoodies (balanced, organic, and preservative free food).

“I love how you have created different themes in the various segments and put so much richness into the children’s days. I really like how you inspire the children’s process. We are noticing at home that Amalia is really into ‘making things’ and ‘building things.’ It’s wonderful!”

Session Curriculum: Over the course of the Summer the children will participate in a curriculum that invites them to explore their creative, critical and expressive languages. Curriculum opportunities may include:

  • Nature Adventures: In this two week session, children embark on nature adventures through the Ecology Trail and El Polin Springs that evoke all of their senses.  Using techniques taken from Jon Young’s Bird Language trainings, children will use binoculars, practice attentive listening skills to track a variety of birds in the Presidio.  After recording their observations in their own field journal children will return to school and use their discoveries in a variety of creative expressions.

Offered: Session 1 (Robins and Red Tail Hawks), Session 2 (Hummingbirds)

  • Magic Trash: In this two week session, children will use beautiful recyclable materials to create their own magical sculpture. During the first week, children will openly explore a variety of materials looking for the ones they would like to focus more on during the second week.  Using plans they created in the first week, children will work closely with teachers in creating their final masterpiece.

Offered: Session 2 (Robins, and Red Tail Hawks)

  • Storytelling in the Forest: During this two-week session children will enter the Presidio forests through the newly restored El Polin Springs and explore the lovely waterways, trees and flowers until they hike up to a majestic eucalyptus tree stump with exposed root system. We will use this space to provoke and inspire imagination, stories and dramatic play as they observe hawks flying overhead and dramatic views of the Bay. Back at school we will revisit our experiences outside with materials inside and bring back props and costumes that will support the children’s stories.

Offered: Session 1 (Hummingbirds)

  • Gardening and Cooking: During this three-week session children will help in the school’s garden by planting new sprouts, watering the plants and harvesting a bountiful array of vegetables and herbs.  The children will work closely with the teachers in planning out yummy treats, meals and even deserts for their group to enjoy.  Groups may venture out to nearby farmer markets and talk with the vendors about their farms and plan out meals using some of their fresh, organic produce or visit the many community gardens nestled within the Presidio community.

Offered: Session 3 (Hummingbirds, Robins, and Red Tail Hawks)
